Avoiding the impulse-driven life

by | May 20, 2024

Part of life for everyone is managing the impulses we confront every day.

The nature of these impulses vary from person to person–and involve matters like food, worry, sex, anger, etc.

But they all seek to drag us away from living the life God intends.

Sinful impulses arise from what the Bible calls the flesh, which wages war against the soul (1 Pet. 2:11).

The fight against impulses can be fierce.

And it’s made more difficult today in that all kinds of impulses once considered sinful are now vaunted as displays of authenticity.

This has led many to be captured by an impulse-driven life.

To live by impulses may seem natural to some, but in the end it is self-destructive.

Since impulses come from the flesh, the only way to overcome them is in the power of the Spirit.

So the Bible tells us…

“… walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Gal. 5:16).

God has not called us to live by impulses.

He has called us to a life of dominion with Him.

To fulfill this call in your own life, refuse to let the passions of the flesh reign over you.

And instead continually present your life to Him as one who has been brought from death to life (Rom. 6:12-13).
