The church and the kingdom

by | Jun 25, 2024

There is a difference between the church and the kingdom of God.

And knowing the difference is important to understanding your role in the world today.

The church refers to those who are called by God to live by faith in Jesus Christ.

It is both a spiritual entity and a visible institution, which manifests itself locally and universally.

The mission of the church is to spread the gospel, as it nurtures its people and disciples the nations.

The kingdom of God, on the other hand, refers to God’s rule over all things.

As such, it is broader and more encompassing than the church.

The kingdom reflects God’s sovereign rule over absolutely everything–as both a present reality and a future hope.

The mission of God’s kingdom is to establish His peace and righteousness in the world…

As individuals and societies are transformed according to God’s will, in fulfillment of His plan for creation.

Now here is where understanding the difference between the church and the kingdom is important…

If you see the church and the kingdom of God as the same, you will limit God’s rule to the affairs of the church…

With little or no application to the world at-large.

And you’ll also be inclined to think the only way to serve God’s purpose is within the context of the church.

But if you understand that the church and kingdom are distinct, you will see that God’s reign applies everywhere.

And, wherever He has you is a legitimate place to bring His rule to bear.

I hope this distinction makes sense to you.

If it doesn’t, it’s worth reading the above again.

If this distinction does make sense, let it inspire you to a new level of faithfulness…

As you live out the principles of the kingdom of God wherever He has called you.

May God raise up through His church a well-equipped multitude to serve as faithful ambassadors of the kingdom, in all of their unique callings.
