Florida’s extreme abortion amendment

Amendment 4

Don’t let Amendment 4’s framing deceive you…

Knowing how to frame issues accurately and truthfully is an important skill to develop.

It’s critical to avoid getting snookered.

And in some cases makes the difference between life and death.

Take the current campaign for Amendment 4 to the Florida State Constitution.

Amendment 4 is deceptively titled…

The ‘Amendment to Limit Government Interference with Abortion.’

With this title, the authors of the proposed amendment have deliberately framed the issue.

The language makes it appear this is an effort to guarantee women the right to decide how to handle an unwanted pregnancy without any government meddling.

TV advertisements in favor of the amendment convey the same liberty-minded idea.

Since most people don’t want the government interfering with their lives, they can be deceived into voting in favor of this proposed amendment.

But the actual text of the amendment reveals it’s much more extreme than the title suggests.

Specifically, if approved, it would effectively:

– Allow late term abortions through birth

– Remove all protections for women and children

– And eliminate parental rights

Further, the amendment would open up the prospect of taxpayer-funded abortions.

With these realities in mind, we can reframe Amendment 4 more accurately.

The amendment is NOT a way to protect women from government interference, as the title implies.

It’s an attempt to legally enshrine UNLIMITED abortion — at any time and for any reason, as determined by abortion clinic employees.

Also, if passed, it would make abortion the ONLY medical procedure a minor can undergo without parental consent.

Getting the framing right on Amendment 4 is essential to understanding what it’s really about…

And it’s a proposal the people of Florida ought to vote NO — for the good of women, children, and, of course, the unborn.

“Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ” (Col. 2:8, NLT).
