The need for vigilance

Rediscovering watchfulness for the life God intends…

Vigilance is fundamental to the life of every man.

Without it, we are easily deceived and led astray.

The need for vigilance goes back to the garden, where God instructed Adam to guard it (Gen. 2:15).

From Adam’s failure in this area has come our own tendency to be heedless rather than watchful.

And to be heedless does a lot of damage.

Yet in Christ, we can recover a godly sense of vigilance.

He supplies us with the Spirit we need and shows us what spiritual alertness looks like in the way He:

– Lived in connection with the Father

– Stayed alert to spiritual opposition

– Discerned the intentions and needs of others

– Guarded His mission and timing in preparation for the cross

Remaining vigilant in our own lives begins by guarding our hearts.

“Watch over your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life” (Proverbs 4:23).

And it continues as we remain constant in prayer with a spirit of gratitude.

“Continue steadfastly in prayer, being watchful in it with thanksgiving” (Colossians 4:2).

Commit today to be watchful in all things…

Care about what’s going on around you.

Give due attention to both threats and opportunities.

Follow Christ closely, staying in step with the Spirit.

In this, you’ll find everything you need to stay alert and fulfill the calling God has placed on your life.

“Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).
