A Season of Renewal

by | Mar 5, 2025

Embracing repentance, mortality, and self-denial…

Traditionally, Christians have used the 40 days before Easter to cultivate humility, repentance, and wisdom.

This season offers a unique opportunity to embrace our humanity—and mortality—while fostering deeper spiritual growth.

But how can we make the most of it?

1) Cultivate a life of repentance

“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near” (Mt. 4:17).

Make a habit of changing your mind—and your ways—to align with God’s character.

2) Be mindful of your mortality

“So teach us to number our days, that we may present to You a heart of wisdom” (Ps. 90:12).

Let the fleeting nature of life prompt you to make the most of each day with God.

3) Practice self-denial

“If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me” (Mt. 16:24).

Resist the pull of self-indulgence that defines our culture, and embrace self-denial as a way of living the life God has for you.

These practices will undoubtedly draw you closer to God.

Even more, they will equip you for the unique role the Lord has for you in His kingdom.

Some view this 40-day period—also known as Lent—as a time of gloom and prohibitions.

But I see it as a season of renewal and refinement… one that prepares us for the work God intends to do through our lives.

Self-reflection can be sobering at times.

But as it leads us to abide more fully in Christ, the result is greater joy—and greater effectiveness in His kingdom.
