A time to speak up

by | Jan 16, 2024

There’s plenty amiss in our world these days.

And you may feel the tug to speak up about the issues that concern you most.

Yet you also may be hesitant to open your mouth for a variety of reasons.

I get it.

But let me encourage you…

Part of staying faithful involves speaking up when the situation requires it.

Yes, there’s a time to be silent… along with a time to speak… as Ecclesiastes says (Ecc. 3:7).

But I’m talking today about the need to use our voices.

The Bible gives us a variety of circumstances when we should say something.

Like…

… when someone is in danger (Pr. 24:11-12)

… there are those who can’t speak for themselves (Pr. 31:8).

… or some falsehood or evil needs to be exposed (Eph. 5:11)

Of course…

In speaking up about anything, we need God’s help.

We need His moral direction.

We need wisdom.

And we need courage.

So, God, help us!

Is there anything in your world you ought to speak up about?

It can take a lot of grace to say what you have to say… and do it in love.

But don’t refrain from speaking up just because it’s hard.

And remember too…

Speaking up doesn’t have to be confrontational.

It might just mean asking a question.

Or starting a conversation.

There’s an old quote that says evil triumphs when good men do nothing.

Amen to that.

And to paraphrase it today we might say…

Evil triumphs when good men remain mute and say nothing.
