Have you given much thought about fasting?
The Bible reveals fasting as an important discipline for focusing our prayers and advancing God’s kingdom.
Yet we tend to neglect it.
And we likely miss greater levels of spiritual power as a result.
The late, great theologian and statesman Abraham Kuyper once pointed out…
Fasting is about much more than abstaining from food.
Rather…
“It aims to put an end to the dominion of the body over the soul, and to restore the soul’s dominion over the body.”
What a fitting insight for our time!
We live in a day when appetites have become God.
And urges for food, drink, sex and other stimulants must not be denied.
Comfort and pleasing the body is king!
And they must be pampered and served at all cost!
But this has it exactly backwards.
It is the soul that must rule over our appetites–not the other way around.
And a good way to restore this order is the discipline of fasting.
Fasting reminds you your body is not in charge.
God is.
And by His grace you can control your body much more than you may think.
Fasting also helps position us so our bodies become a vehicle for serving God and others…
Instead of just a container for impulses seeking gratification.
So…
If you want greater dominion in your life, I encourage you to incorporate fasting.
(Maybe even start today by skipping lunch, and using the time to prayerfully feed on God’s Word.)
Remember…
Ultimately…
The body is meant for the Lord (1 Cor. 6:13).
