From Suffering to Renewal

God’s Path to Transformation

Over the years I’ve walked with many men through dark times.

And I’ve been blessed by men who have walked with me.

Suffering is never easy.

Yet we all face it.

And God can use it for good.

But how do we faithfully endure it—and come out stronger?

Scripture calls us to partake in Christ’s dying and rising (Phil. 3:10).

Paul Miller calls this the J-Curve—descending into suffering with Jesus and trusting God to bring renewal.

This isn’t just theology; it’s the shape of the Christian life.

Jesus embraced the cross, trusting the Father to raise Him up.

We’re invited to do the same by:

-Letting go of control.

-Dying to resentment and self-sufficiency.

-Loving others at personal cost.

But suffering isn’t the end.

Just as Jesus rose, we look for resurrection—not always in dramatic ways, but in renewed strength, softened hearts, and deeper trust in God.

This plays out daily:

-In marriage, where dying to self brings intimacy.

-In work, where perseverance bears fruit.

-In trials, where waiting on God transforms us.

Identifying with Christ’s sufferings isn’t a way around our afflictions, but through them as they shape us into Christ’s image.

So when dark days come, don’t merely endure.

Enter them with Christ, trusting that resurrection and newness of life will come.

Keep your eyes on Him.

Embrace the transformation He brings.
