How to avoid being good for nothing

by | Apr 19, 2024

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men” (Mt. 5:13).

Most people I know want their lives to matter.

They want them to be good for something and have impact.

And they dread thinking of their lives as good for nothing.

Is there a way to avoid this? And know your life counts for something?

According to Jesus there is:

Don’t lose your saltiness.

Since ancient times salt has served as a preservative and seasoning.

So when Jesus calls his followers ‘the salt of the earth’ He identifies them as those who would preserve and bring flavor to the world.

And He warns if we lose these properties, we become ‘good for nothing.’

Pretty strong language coming from the Savior.

But helpful too.

Because it makes plain…

If you want your life to count, don’t just blend in with the world.

Be distinct by living according to the values of His kingdom…

In a way that others will see and take notice.

As your bring His truth, goodness and beauty to bear wherever you go.
