Lessons from Patton for the Christian Life

Prepping for everyday spiritual battles…

Whenever my wife is traveling, I watch a movie she wouldn’t normally enjoy.

This time it was the military classic, Patton.

As I watched, I couldn’t miss how the film illustrates principles that mirror our life with God—especially in the battles we face as citizens of His kingdom.

Strategy. Discipline. Courage. Leadership. Self-control.

Patton’s battlefield experience reminds us the Christian life is not passive.

We are enlisted soldiers in a spiritual war… called to stand firm, act with purpose, and fight faithfully in every battle that comes.

Just as Patton—an imperfect man—prepared his troops, studied the terrain, and demanded discipline, we too are called to equip ourselves.

Scripture tells us to “put on the whole armor of God” and to “fight the good fight of faith.”

Our enemy is real, though unseen.

And the battles we face—temptation, discouragement, fear, sin—require vigilance and courage.

But here’s the hope:

Christ has already won the ultimate victory.

So in Him, we don’t fight for victory—we fight from victory.

And as we follow Him, He trains us, strengthens us, and leads us into triumph.

Life in this fallen world is filled with battles.

You can’t avoid them—or go A.WO.L.

But as you look to your Commander, you are readied to serve as a good soldier—faithful and effective.

Aim to please the One who enlisted you (2 Tim. 2:4).
