Making Plans and Setting Goals

Aligning your agenda to God’s purpose

It’s the season for making plans and setting goals.

And this isn’t just a modern practice—it’s a biblical one.

God Himself has eternal plans for the good of His creation…

And as His image bearers, we’re called to plan and work with purpose, too.

Throughout Scripture, we see examples of those who made plans under God’s guidance:

  • Noah followed God’s precise instructions to build the ark and save his family.
  • Abraham sent his servant on a mission to find a wife for Isaac, trusting God to lead the way.
  • Joseph implemented a strategy to store grain during years of plenty, preparing Egypt for famine.
  • Moses obeyed God’s direction to deliver the Israelites from Egypt and lead them toward the Promised Land.
  • David made extensive preparations for the temple, even though Solomon would build it.
  • Nehemiah prayed, sought resources, and organized workers to rebuild Jerusalem’s walls despite opposition.
  • Paul carefully planned his missionary journeys, preaching in key cities and strengthening churches through letters and visits.

What do all these examples have in common?

Their plans weren’t made on a whim.

They aligned their goals with God’s larger plan for His people and His kingdom.

What About Us?

As you consider your goals for the year ahead, don’t make them in isolation.

Instead, create your plans under the leadership of the Holy Spirit, guided by the Bible and prayer.

When our goals align with God’s purposes, they bear fruit that lasts far beyond our lifetimes.

So ask yourself:

  • How can my plans serve God’s kingdom?
  • What does His Word say about my goals?
  • Have I sought His wisdom in prayer?

Let’s be intentional about planning in a way that honors Him.

“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established” (Pr. 16:3).
