Overcoming Fear

How God’s love gives courage to follow His call…

The Bible commands us not to be afraid.

There’s a reason for this.

Fear keeps us from entering into the fullness of God’s kingdom.

When Joshua was about to lead the people into the Promised Land, God urged him not to tremble or be frightened (Josh. 1:9).

In the New Testament, Jesus—our greater Joshua—regularly says some version of “Take courage… don’t be afraid” (Mt. 14:27).

And He warns that longing for the past or fearing the unknown can hold us back from embracing God’s calling:

“No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Lk. 9:62).

The Bible gives us these warnings because God knows fear will test us.

But how do we overcome fear so we can step into all that God has for us?

The Bible offers several antidotes, emphasizing faith, trust, and God’s presence.

But the most powerful antidote may surprise you: LOVE.

“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love” (1 Jn. 4:18).

Understanding and embracing God’s perfect love removes fear because it assures us of His goodness and care.

So when fear creeps in, remember God’s love for you.

There’s no greater source of courage.

And as we walk in His love, we are able to follow where He leads.
