A biblical take on possessions…
Christians often feel guilty about their possessions.
Yet God created a material world—for our blessing and His glory.
And when He made all that He did, He called it ‘very good’ (Gen. 1:31).
The issue isn’t in owning things; it’s when those things start to own us.
The key to breaking free from material attachments is seeing our possessions as gifts from God, entrusted to us for life in His kingdom.
These four principles can help you adopt this kingdom-centered view of what you own:
1. God is the provider of everything we have.
“Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17).
2. We are called to care for what God has entrusted to us.
“He who is faithful in a very little thing is faithful also in much; and he who is unrighteous in a very little thing is unrighteous also in much” (Luke 16:10).
3. We should also use what we have to create growth and benefit.
“For it is just like a man about to go on a journey, who called his own servants and entrusted his possessions to them…” (Matthew 25:14ff).
4. Finally, God wants us to be generous with what’s in our care.
“Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6).
Whether God gives you a little or a lot, receive it with gratitude.
And be diligent in using it for the good of His kingdom.
