Technology as a tool for dominion

by | Nov 13, 2023

Christians have different views of technology.

And the view one has makes a difference when it comes to advancing God’s Kingdom.

Some see every new technology as a tool of the devil – and will stay far from it.

While others see the latest tech promising to usher in the millennium – and end up giving it more attention than it deserves.

My own view is that the Dominion Mandate (Gen. 1:28) leads to a mostly positive view of technology.

If God calls us to rule and cultivate and protect, it only makes sense that we would come up with the most effective ways to accomplish this…

And, this perspective has led to advancements in technology through history…

While improving the quality of life for millions.

Indeed, there are risks with technology to guard against…

… We can make new tools an idol that take the place of God in our hearts.

… And, evil men can use tech to control and harm others.

Yet changes and growth in technology are unavoidable…

God made people to bear his image, who will create and innovate as a part of our nature.

So we need good people who can know how to develop and use all kinds of technology for good purposes.

Practically… and on a personal level… I believe everyone needs to assess their own use of technology.

And a simple way to do this is to ask yourself about any specific item…

Am I using this to serve my flesh or to better fulfill my place in God’s kingdom?

Once you get an answer, ask the Lord to guide you in handling that particular technology in your life.

That may mean getting rid of it… or more skilled at it.

In the end…

We must not trust in chariots or horses or whatever recent technology is at our disposal…

But, using technology as a tool of dominion is an honorable pursuit…

As long as our trust is in the name of the Lord our God (Ps. 20:7).
