When the demand for wisdom is low

by | Sep 12, 2023

In his commentary on Proverbs, Gary North makes an interesting observation…

He notes that typically the demand for wisdom is low.

People just don’t tend to want it.

Even when you’d expect they would.

Like when ancient Israel was under judgement…

You’d think they’d be crying out for wisdom to escape their trouble, but they weren’t.

Or more recently…

After World War I, you’d think all the heartache and suffering experienced would lead to a hunger–or at least respect–for wisdom…

Yet instead we got the debauchery of the 20s.

And today…

With all the cultural turmoil taking place…

It seems like there would be a big market for wisdom…

Yet there isn’t.

We’re just too occupied chasing other things.

But…

Don’t let that stop you from seeking wisdom yourself.

The promise at the end of Proverbs chapter one is…

He who listens to wisdom’s call will ‘live securely’ and ‘be at ease from the dread of evil.’

In a day filled with fears, that’s a big promise.

And it’s available to you.

Therefore…

Seek wisdom.

Though the public demand for wisdom is low, the truth remains:

‘Wisdom is the principal thing’ (Pr. 4:7).
