The need for heroes

Recovering biblical virtues today…

Every era needs its heroes, including our own.

So we should ask God to give us heroes…

And be willing to act heroically ourselves when situations demand it.

But first, we need to understand what a hero is.

The ancient idea of hero was rooted in pride.

It was all about defending one’s personal honor and reputation.

So in Homer’s Iliad, the pagan hero kills out of a motivation to protect his name and legacy.

The biblical concept of hero is different.

It’s not centered on oneself, but on serving God and others.

And instead of being rooted in pride, it’s grounded in humility.

Many characters in the Bible reflect this kind of heroism, each embodying distinct, timeless virtues:

Abraham — faith

David — trust in God

Esther — bravery

Joseph — integrity

Ruth — loyalty

Daniel — courage

Paul — zeal

These attributes are not relics of the past.

They are traits we need in our world today.

And you don’t need to be a biblical character to embody them.

Neither do you have to be well-known.

You just need to possess true faith—not seeking honor for yourself, but doing what’s right while trusting in God.

“So be strong, act like a man, and observe what the Lord your God requires… ” (1 Kings 2:2-3).
