The power of your words

by | Nov 14, 2023

The average person speaks somewhere between 7,000 and 20,000 words per day.

The numbers vary according to one’s living situation, job and personality.

But what really matters is not the number of words we use…

… but whether we harness their power for good.

Words are powerful.

In the beginning, God used words to create the world.

And as His image-bearers we use words to develop and create the kind of world we live in today.

The Bible says much about the power of words.

It tells us…

“Death and life are in the power of the tongue…” (Pr. 18:21).

Our talk should be “good for building up, as fits the occasion… (Eph. 4:29).

And “rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing” (Pr. 12:18).

These verses remind us our words have a great effect.

And sometimes the impact can be long lasting…

Which can either discourage OR rally to greatness.

Another verse from Proverbs tells us “the mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life” (Pr. 10:11).

This presents a helpful picture for considering your own speech.

Every day you are watering those around you with your words.

If those words flow from a faithful walk with God, they really can build up and bring life to others.

So contribute to something wonderful in the making with your words today.
