Virtue vs. virtue signaling

by | Jun 19, 2024

There’s a big difference between virtue and virtue signaling.

Virtue signaling expresses opinions or sentiments in order to show one’s moral correctness or social conscience.

The emphasis is on making a public display, to give an appearance of virtue and even moral superiority.

Virtue signaling tends to be driven by gaining social approval.

And as a result, its often superficial and prompted by the fear of man.

Real virtue, on the other hand, doesn’t care much about appearance.

It’s committed to what’s right for its own sake, regardless of whether others notice or approve.

And it values prudence, justice, courage, temperance, faith, hope and love as enduring standards of what is truly virtuous.

We need more real virtue, and less virtue signaling.
