What is “Normal,” Really?

by | Aug 14, 2025

God’s definition hasn’t changed…

People talk about “getting back to normal.”

But what is normal?

I was thinking about this recently after reading an article by my friend George Grant on the Creation Ordinances.

These are God-given norms that go back to the beginning—reflecting His original design for the world.

They define “normal” from God’s perspective. And they haven’t changed.

Here they are…

20 Creational Norms:

1. God’s sovereignty (Gen. 1:1)

2. Creation out of nothing (Gen. 1:1)

3. Creator/creation distinction (Gen. 1:2)

4. Creation declared “very good” (Gen. 1:4, etc.)

5. Made “according to kinds” (Gen. 1:12, 24–27)

6. Time and seasons ordered (Gen. 1:17–19)

7. Life teeming on earth (Gen. 1:20–21)

8. Multiply and be fruitful (Gen. 1:22)

9. Humanity in God’s image (Gen. 1:26–27)

10. Male and female created (Gen. 1:27)

11. Fill the earth (Gen. 1:28)

12. Steward the earth (Gen. 1:28)

13. Exercise godly dominion (Gen. 1:28)

14. Food as God’s provision (Gen. 1:29)

15. Sabbath rest (Gen. 2:3–4)

16. Linear history (Gen. 2:4)

17. Work and keep the garden (Gen. 2:15)

18. Name and order creation (Gen. 2:19)

19. Marriage covenant (Gen. 2:23)

20. Leave and cleave (Gen. 2:24)

If you ever wonder what “normal” really is—start here.

You’ll never go wrong going back to these foundational truths.

They will give you clarity about what is normal.
