Where do you turn when troubled?

by | Jun 14, 2024

“The Lord is a stronghold in times of trouble” (Ps. 9:9)

A crucial lesson we all must learn is where to turn when we face trouble.

There are many options.

Some are helpful…

Like talking to friends, engaging in a hobby, or exercising.

Yet other sources of relief are ultimately unhealthy and self-destructive…

Turning to addictive substances, overeating, escaping through entertainment or compulsive behaviors.

In contrast, the Bible guides us to turn to the Lord during times of trouble.

It emphasizes trusting Him rather than relying on worldly comforts.

“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1).

“Cast your burden on the Lord and He will sustain you…” (Ps. 55:22).

“In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (Jn. 16:33).

Consider where you tend to turn when you are anxious or burdened.

Make a habit of turning to the Lord as your refuge.

This may require making some new neural pathways in your brain, as the Spirit leads you to put off the old and put on the new.

But by making Him your default source of comfort, you will avoid the snares of other sources.

And you will stay in position to carry out the unique calling God has on your life.
