Why the Bible really tells us not to fear

by | May 16, 2024

A recurring theme in the Bible is that we are not to be afraid.

And the admonition ‘fear not’ is a familiar one.

It’s natural to assume that Scripture directs us not to fear for our emotional support.

But the bigger reason the Bible exhorts us this way is so we would carry out the mission God has for us.

Just consider some of these messages from His Word…

Joshua before leading the Israelites into the Promised Land:

“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Josh. 1:9).

Gideon before fighting the Midianites:

“But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die'” (Jud. 6:23).

Isaiah’s message to the Israelites:

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand” (Isa. 41:10).

Angel’s message to Mary:

“But the angel said to her, ‘Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God'” (Lk. 1:30).

Jesus’ words to his disciples:

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid” (Jn. 14:27).

In each of theses cases a message not to fear was given so the hearers would be faithful in what God had planned for them.

We must take the same message to heart as we face whatever the Lord may lead us into.

When we are afraid, we:

– Become immobilized

– Procrastinate

– And pursue distractions or escapes

But when we face our fears with courage and strength…

We are able to fully enter into the purpose God has for us…

No matter how scary it may seem.

“Fear not… for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom” (Lk. 12:32).
