Prior to His last breath on the cross, Jesus said “It is finished” (Jn.19:30).
What did He mean by that?
What in particular did He finish?
Several things actually…
First and foremost, Jesus paid in full the debt of our sins.
“In Him we have redemption through His blood…” (Eph.1:7).
So we are no longer cursed with condemnation, yet blessed by His favor.
But Jesus also finished other things on the cross…
He completed the specific mission His Father sent Him to accomplish.
He fulfilled dozens of prophecies about His work here on earth.
He broke the power of sin and Satan for good.
And He purchased forever a people for His own possession.
By His finished work on the cross–and subsequent resurrection–Jesus permanently changed the trajectory of history from darkness to light.
And He gives those who were dead in their sins new life in Him.
What Jesus accomplished on the cross will never be repeated.
And it never needs to…
Because what He did there provides all that’s necessary for God to reconcile the world to Himself and make all things new.
Remarkably, on the cross, Jesus conquered by dying.
By trusting Him, we conquer too.
And having been bought with the price of His blood…
He sets us free to glorify Him as we pursue every good thing He’s prepared for us to do.
Praise God!
Happy Easter!
