Most Men Are Starving for Purpose

by | May 8, 2026

What’s a man created to be?

A man needs to know what he was created for.

If he doesn’t, he’ll just spin his wheels.

He’ll meander, react, and consume.

And he’ll waste time and strength on things that don’t matter.

But when a man begins to understand who God made him to be and why he’s here, things change.

He gains focus, direction, and energy.

And he acquires a sense of mission.

Nearly 30 years ago, Bill Mouser’s “Five Aspects of Man” helped shape my understanding of biblical masculinity.

Mouser taught that a man is called to be:

• a ruler
• cultivator
• protector
• wise guide
• image-bearer of God

These aspects work together to form a mature man.

So:

A man is meant to exercise dominion under God.

To cultivate life instead of merely consume it.

To protect what is valuable.

To grow in wisdom and help guide others.

And ultimately, to reflect the character and glory of God in the world.

This vision stands in sharp contrast to the confusion many men experience today.

Most men are starving for purpose.

They don’t need another distraction.

They need a mission that suits their ambition and strength.

God did not create men to live passive, fragmented, self-centered lives.

He created them to build, protect, cultivate, and serve His Kingdom in every sphere of life.

And that begins with understanding what a man was made for.
