An important part of a man’s identity is understanding why God put him here.
Without that clarity, a man can stay busy—even successful—and still feel unsettled.
He can provide, perform, and push through life, and still wonder if he’s actually building anything that matters.
That tension doesn’t go away easily. It’s part of being human.
We were created with purpose.
David Chilton, in Paradise Restored, develops this idea in a helpful way.
He argues that God does not create or redeem us so we can escape the world, but so we can faithfully live in it under His rule.
That means redemption is more than forgiveness. It is restoration.
Restoration to what we were made for.
Your identity is not something to invent. It is something to receive.
You are not a cosmic accident. You are God’s image-bearer.
And that has practical meaning.
It shows up in faithful work, stewardship, and responsibility.
Chilton summarizes it this way:
“The Gospel restores man to his rightful place in creation.”
That “rightful place” is not passivity or withdrawal, but faithful engagement.
To cultivate, build, and protect what is good.
To take responsibility for what God has entrusted to you.
So the question is not merely, “What do I want to do with my life?”
It is, “What has God made me for—and am I actually living that way?”
Because a man who knows that answer is no longer aimless.
He’s in a position to build.
